I'm not sure what this is...mostly just my recollection and what the con was like...but here it is. And it was only my second convention (and the biggest one I've ever been to) so I'm aloud to be excited.
I missed the first day plus opening ceremony because I was coming back from a trip, but I was at the convention last Saturday and Sunday. It costs around 40$ average per day, but I pre-registered for 40$ for all three days...the line to pick up badges was horrendous nonetheless. XP
The first thing I did on Saturday was watch the cosplay skits with my friends, the winning one was my favorite, titled 'Sora the Explorer'.
Here's a link, but it was filmed by someone in the audience rather than the version that the camera crew filmed at the con. I'll post a link to a better quality one when I find it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjy5L7BVw_E
There were others, but they were filmed off the video screen and therefore very crappy quality.
( SPOILER/SLASH/COMMENTARY: And YES, I was in the audience, cheering on the fan service and yelling 'KEYBLADE' at the top of my lungs so that Sora didn't die...& I was rather impressed when Naruto was sniped...)
There were other good skits, the ones that stick out in my mind the most being the one where Marth sang 'Every time we touch' and when Haruhi needed Mikuru to do a 'sexy dance' to attract club members...thus ending in her dancing the time warp from rocky horror picture show.
There was also a slight bit of Twilight bashing after a Hellsing skit, which was much loved.
Host: “How many of you love Hellsing? I’ll tell you what, I like it a lot better than sparkly vampires. ‘I’m the perfect killing machine, -twinkletwinkle-‘.”
We also saw cosplay chess, which evolves characters acting as the chess pieces on a giant board and having battles over spaces for exchanges and such. It's all pre-choreographed, but it was awesome to see. Especially seeing Jesus taking down Kenshin, and other such nonsense fights.
We also went to the photo shoots, but since I didn't have a cosplay, I just sort of hung around. Next year I'm going as Yamato (from Loveless, obviously) And Larxene (from Kingdom Hearts). One of my friends is going as Koya next year so we can have a pairing :D
On a side note...I noticed every time you start doing something remotely lesbian, people take pictures...it'll be even more so next year, I guess.
Back to cosplay, my three favorites were as follows:
3. A giant box of pocky.
2. No face from Spirited away, with a slot that opened up and became a mouth, when this was used to eat people in the cosplay chess, the person inside would yell “NOM, NOM, NOM.”
1. Axel, from kingdom hearts, with limp and not spiky hair, but a sign on his back that said ‘Cloud stole my hair gel’.
The dealers room, where all the merchandise stands are, is FANTASTIC and overwhelming. I came with $120.00 and spent every dime. (Pins...lolita clothes...and such random stuff). They did have much more then I expected, but that was bound to happen given that Sakura con is one of the larger conventions in the US.
They had art supplies such as manga paper and copic sketch pens, art books, ect. There wads also some really great artwork, much of it with reasonable prices.
Also cosplay outfits and accessories, model weapons, and such.
And my favorite...Yaoi/slash/Yuri panels. -melt-
I didn't buy any because most of the series I were looking for were either all gone or the shounen-ai versions. I was somewhat disappointed that there were no Yaoi or Shounen Ai posters, only Yuri and Shoujou ai. They did look really nice, though, and high quality. I probably would have gotten a poster is I could have afforded one (the nice ones run between 70-100 dollars) And I would not like explaining that to my parents when they come into my room.
I was very entertained by the fact that they cover up 'indecent' sections of merchandise with pieces of paper saying things like "Oh, come on, it's like you were going to church anyway..."
And apparently at the Yaoi panels, guys selling books are supposed to yell random perverted sayings...it's quite silly:
"Boys will be boys together, come buy pictures in extreme uncensored detail!"
"Get your hot, steamy smuts here!"
& My favorite "Yaoi! Flaming hot Yaoi, to keep you warm at night when your boyfriend won't!...Did I mention I love my job!?"
They also invite voice actors who were the voices for the Japanese version of Anime series, and you can get their autographs and all that jazz.
There are concerts, too (squee). Some are invited J-rock bands, and others are sponsors. The sponsoring band that I saw was Hangry and Angry, and I thought they were pretty good, the meoldies of their songs were at least (and if you're in a mosh-pit, it's not like you can make out lyrics anyway... )
For the closing ceremonies they gave a showing of the rockband and karaoke winners, plus thanking the sponsors and showing the AMV contest winners.
These were amazing, the three winners were called 'the death knight' a deathnote AMV dubbed over with a trailer for the dark knight, with Light as the Joker.
A comic strip involving a bunch of guys from a few series getting their asses handed to them on Counter Strike, & being beaten by random female characters (GO HARUHI!).
And a transformers video of Domo Argigato Mr. Roboto.
I will post links to these if I can find them.
I didn’t watch the entire contest because there were hundreds of entries, but one that I really liked was an xxxHolic AMV with the sixth sense dubbed over it. It worked so well (especially if you know the series) and the only problem was that the dubbing could have been more in-sync with the animation.
However, they are slightly sadistic in that during the closing ceremony they flash ‘You just lost the game’ on the screens every ten minutes.
(On that note, I just lost the game)
You can also find Sakura Con videos all over youtube that show the 2009 contests, panels, ect. I just ask you one thing, please, PLEASE don’t watch the commercial, there was not a single Otaku who liked it, and in truth most of the convention staff didn’t like it either.
And before I forget, there are random sayings people shout and the audience yells back…here are the ones I remember:
Marco -->Polo
Yaoi --> Yuri
Naru --> Sasu
Objection! --> Affection (or) Overruled!
It’s over NINE THOUSAND! (nothing to shout back)
...yes, there is more, but I'm tired, so this is all for now...
